The Parish of Belém was created with the merger of the parishes of São Francisco Xavier and Santa Maria de Belém in the west of Lisbon. Here are 3 of the most iconic symbols of Lisbon and of Portugal: the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the Jerónimos Monastery.

The Parish of Belém is located in the extreme west (southwest) of the City of Lisbon. From the Cathedral of Lisbon to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos Monument, in Belém, are 9.2 km away.

The Parish of Belém is the sixteenth most populous parish in Lisbon.

Area and Population

Stable resident population
With 10.43 km², the Parish of Belém has a population of 16,549 inhabitants (INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 16,528 inhabitants (idem), with practically no drop in population resident during this period.


Tourist attractions

The Tower of Belém, Monument to the Discoveries, Jerónimos Monastery, Praça do Império, Centro Cultural de Belém and other attractions.


Jeronimo Monastery

The Mosteiro dos Jerônimos, a grandiose architectural monument of the Portuguese capital, was built by D. Manuel I and the works, begun in 1501, lasted a century. The Mosteiro dos Jerônimos is a unmissable visit.

Location

With the River Tagus to the south and southeast, the Parish of Belém is limited to the north by the Parish of Benfica, to the northeast and east, with the Parish of Ajuda, to the southeast, with the Parish of Alcântara, and to the west and northwest, with the municipality of Oeiras.
