Portugal's highest city
The County (State) of Viseu, in central Portugal whose head office is located 291 km to the south of the city of Lisbon is one of the 18 counties (distritos) of Portugal.Guarda is a city, a county and a county situated in the Central Region of Portugal in the former province of Beira Alta, subregion North Interior Beira. The city of Guarda (43,822 inhab., INE, 2001), at an altitude of 1056 m, is the highest in Portugal.
The foundation of the Guard in 1199 by Dom Sancho I aimed to create outposts to secure the borders of Kingdom. This is attested by the presence of the various castles in the area.
