Arroios

Curious about the origin of the name? That's right! Through the territory of the current parish flowed several watercourses.
"The name Arroios evokes those watercourses that existed around here and that still survive in the toponyms of the streets of the parish" [JF de Arroios].

About Arroios

The Parish of Arroios was once a stronghold of Lisbon's upper-middle and upper classes. Neighborhood with buildings signed by well-known Portuguese architects.

Nowadays, Arroios is a place where people from very different backgrounds live together:
"Immigration brought about great population changes in the area, and today it is one of the areas with the greatest interculturality of Lisbon, which the urban rehabilitation of the area has sought to frame" [JF de Arroios].

Move around Arroios

In addition to several bus lines (buses) of the company Carris, Arroios is served by several lines of the Lisbon Metro, the stations Anjos, Intendente, Arroios, Picoas, Saldanha and Alameda. Also, it is not far from the Restauradores station, in the center from Lisbon.

A bit of history

The Parish of Arroios was created in 2012, from the union of the parishes of São Jorge de Arroios and parts of the parishes of Pena, Anjos and São José.

"The settlement of this territory grew along the two first poles, the Church of the Holy Angels (1551) and the Convento de Santana (1562). Fertile lands, abundant in water, established populations and around here numerous convents were installed, which after the extinction of the Religious Orders were converted, the vast majority, in hospital equipment" [JF de Arroios].

"The opening of Avenida Almirante Reis determined the urbanization of nearby farms, with the emergence of Andrade, England, Azores and Colónias, thus known by the thematic toponymy, destined to the petty bourgeoisie that worked nearby" [Idem].
