A bit of history
Place of greatest importance for the history of Lisbon and Portugal. More recently, the
Parish of Belém
was created in 2012, with the merger of the parishes of
São José, Coração de Jesus and São Mamede.
However, the place had already been inhabited for many centuries. Bairro Santos in Rego, in 1180, was the
first known, not to mention the Roman occupation in the 50s AD.
"In 1755, after the earthquake followed by a marquake that devastated Lisbon, many of the inhabitants of the capital,
frightened by the destruction and possible aftershocks of the catastrophe, they fled from the lower part of the city,
and settled in the territory that today makes up the parish of Avenidas Novas, which suffered, at the time, a huge
demographic growth.
More than a century later, in 1888, Ressano Garcia redesigned the urban structure, proceeding with the
widening of streets and avenues, accompanying the entire restructuring with a strong environmental component:
the planting of poplars, Japanese acacias, beeches, aylantos, white acacias, among other species.
At this time, single-family houses also appeared, with eclectic façades, in the Art Nouveau style.
and Art Deco, mainly occupied by an expanding middle, upper-middle and upper class. O
Parque da Liberdade (currently Parque Eduardo VII de Inglaterra) was already included in the final design of
Ressano Garcia, approved in 1889, although its current configuration was designed by
architect Francisco Keil do Amaral already in the 40s of the 20th century.
At the end of the 19th century, more precisely in 1890, the construction of the Cintura Railway,
where the Rego-Lisboa station was integrated, further fostered the growth and development
das Avenidas Novas" [JF de Avenidas Novas].
