The municipality, with 164,255 inhabitants (INE 2021), and the city of Gondomar - the fourth most important city in the district -, in the former Douro Litoral, are located in Porto Metropolitan Region.
Location
The municipality of Gondomar is bordered to the north and northeast by Valongo, to the west with the Porto, to the southwest with Vila Nova de Gaia, to the northeast with Paredes, to the northwest with Maia, to the southeast with Penafiel and Castelo de Paiva and to the south with Arouca and Santa Maria da Feira.Area and Population
With an area of 132 km², the municipality of Gondomar is the fourth most populous municipality in the Porto District, with 164,257 inhabitants, behind Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Matosinhos.Gondomar experienced its peak population in 2011, when it had 168,027 inhabitants according to the census of that year (INE, 2011).
Gondomar, Capital of Goldsmithing
From the time of the gold mining explorations in Gondomar, the goldsmithing activity remained as a legacy in the municipality, which, even today, is the main economic activity of Gondomar, which holds the title of Capital of Goldsmithing."The art of working this precious metal is a legacy that accumulates centuries of history, a result of the existence and exploitation of gold mines. Valboeiros Boats of the Douro

Gondomar and the Douro
The Douro River crosses Gondomar for 32 km, from Melres to Valbom. Even today, lamprey fishing and artisanal fishing are practiced in the parish of Lomba.
