Alcochete

Alcochete, Setúbal - Municipality of the district of Setúbal, the city (10.700 inhab.) and the municipalty of Alcochete (17.600 inhab.) are situated to the east of Lisbon. From Alcochete to Lisbon, there are just over 33,1 km. King D. Manuel I was born in Alcochete in 1469.

Castle, Monastery and History - In addition to the famous castle, in the Monastery of Alcobaça there are the tombs of D. Pedro and Da. Inês de Castro.

It was in the parish of Aljubarrota where the important battle for the independence of Portugal was fought, the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385). Portugal commanded by D. João I defeats the armies of Castile and Leon commanded by D. Juan I. See also Batalha.
